OVERVIEW

5 DAYS LAKE MANYARA / SERENGETI / NGORONGORO

Alright, let’s dive into an overview of Lake Manyara, the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater, focusing on what makes each of these Tanzanian destinations special:

Lake Manyara National Park (Tanzania)

  • Soda Lake Spectacle: The park is defined by its alkaline Lake Manyara, which often shimmers with a pink hue thanks to the massive flocks of flamingos that gather along its shores. The number of flamingos can vary depending on water levels and food availability.
  • Unusual Tree-Climbing Lions: While not a guaranteed sight, Lake Manyara is noted for its lions that have adapted to climbing trees, often lounging on branches during the heat of the day.
  • Habitat Diversity in a Small Package: Despite being relatively compact, Manyara showcases a remarkable range of habitats, from lush groundwater forests and acacia woodlands to grassy plains and marshlands, all nestled at the foot of the dramatic Great Rift Valley Escarpment.
  • Birdwatcher’s Paradise: With over 400 species recorded, the park is a haven for bird enthusiasts. Expect to see a variety of waterbirds, raptors, and forest-dwelling species.
  • Elephant Country: Lake Manyara is known for its healthy populations of elephants, often seen in large herds feeding along the lake and within the forests.
  • Other Wildlife Encounters: Visitors can also spot buffaloes, giraffes (including the darker-maned Masai giraffe), zebras, wildebeest, hippos, and various antelope species. Primates like baboons and blue monkeys are also common sights.
  • Unique Activities: Beyond standard game drives, Lake Manyara sometimes offers opportunities for canoeing on the lake, providing a unique perspective on the wildlife and the stunning scenery.

Serengeti National Park (Tanzania)

  • The Iconic Endless Plains: The vast, seemingly limitless savannah is the hallmark of the Serengeti. Its name comes from the Maasai word “Siringit,” meaning “endless plains.”
  • The Great Wildebeest Migration: This is arguably the most famous wildlife spectacle on Earth, involving the annual movement of millions of wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, in search of fresh grazing. The timing and location of the herds vary throughout the year.
  • Apex Predator Haven: The Serengeti boasts incredibly high populations of predators, including lions (often seen in prides on rocky outcrops called kopjes), leopards (typically solitary and elusive), cheetahs (well-suited to the open plains), hyenas, and wild dogs.
  • Home to the “Big Five” and Beyond: It offers exceptional opportunities to see lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos (both black and white, though rhino sightings can be less frequent in some areas), and buffaloes, along with a wealth of other wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, numerous antelope species, and over 500 bird species.
  • Diverse Ecosystems: While primarily known for its grasslands, the Serengeti also encompasses woodlands, riverine forests, and the characteristic kopjes, each supporting distinct ecological communities.
  • Panoramic Views from Above: Hot air balloon safaris are a popular way to truly appreciate the immense scale of the Serengeti plains and observe wildlife from a breathtaking vantage point.
  • Cultural Connections: Opportunities exist to visit Maasai villages bordering the park, offering insights into their traditional culture and way of life.
  • A Crucial Conservation Area: The Serengeti is a vital area for wildlife research and conservation efforts, playing a key role in maintaining East Africa’s biodiversity.

Ngorongoro Crater (Tanzania)

  • A Natural Wonder: The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera, a breathtaking geological formation that plunges approximately 600 meters below the rim.
  • A Self-Contained Ecosystem: The crater floor forms a unique and relatively small ecosystem (about 260 square kilometers) that supports an incredibly high density of diverse wildlife year-round.
  • Exceptional Wildlife Viewing: The concentration of animals within the crater is remarkable, offering fantastic opportunities to see all of the “Big Five” in a relatively confined area.
  • Significant Black Rhino Sanctuary: The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in East Africa to spot the endangered black rhino.
  • Lake Magadi’s Pink Hues: A soda lake on the crater floor often attracts flocks of flamingos, adding to the scenic beauty.
  • Archaeological Significance Nearby: The adjacent Olduvai Gorge is a world-renowned archaeological site with significant discoveries related to early human evolution.
  • Coexistence with the Maasai: The Maasai people traditionally graze their livestock within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, including the crater rim, creating a unique cultural and ecological landscape.
  • Controlled Access: Due to its ecological sensitivity, access to the crater floor is regulated, often involving a permit and specific routes for vehicles.

In summary, Lake Manyara offers a more intimate and diverse wildlife experience beneath the Rift Valley Escarpment, the Serengeti provides the quintessential African safari with its vast plains and the dramatic Great Migration, and the Ngorongoro Crater presents a unique and concentrated wildlife spectacle within a stunning natural enclosure. Together, they form a classic and unforgettable Tanzanian safari circuit.

ITINERARY

DAY: 1 ARUSHA – LAKE MANYARA

Our first day starts early in the morning. After breakfast we pick you up at your hotel in Arusha. We’re on the way to Lake Manyara. The national park is a lovely location; a thin green band of forest, flanked on one side by the cliffs of the Rift Valley Wall, on the other by the shores of the ancient soda lake. Wildlife here is very diverse. We’ll see many baboons and if we’re lucky – the famous tree-climbing lion. Lake Manyara is also one of the finest parks for bird lovers. In the afternoon we’ll drive to Karatu for dinner and overnight Campsite.

DAY 2: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast we start with a drive to the Serengeti national park . There’s a lot to observe: More than 1.5 million wildebeest and 700 000 zebras are on their way here if we pass by at the time of the famous annual migration. After a Sunset Game Drive we will have Dinner and Overnight in the campsite.

DAY 3: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Our day starts with a drive in Serengeti. For animals, early morning is an active time of the day since it is not yet too hot so there is a lot to see out there. Serengeti offers arguably the most fascinating game viewing in Africa; great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephants and giraffes, and a thousands upon thousands of elands, topi, kongoni, impala and grant’s gazelle.

The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzania’s greatest park. Golden-maned lion prides feast on the abundance of plain grazers. Solitary leopards haunt the acacia trees lining the Seronera River, while a high density of cheetahs prowls the southeastern plains. Almost uniquely, all three African jackal species occur here, alongside the spotted hyena and a host of more elusive small predators, ranging from the insectivorous aardwolf to the beautiful serval cat.

DAY 4: SERENGETI – NGORONGORO C. AREA

Pre-breakfast game drive ,full breakfast and later drive to Ngorongoro conservation area. On our way back we will stop for picnic lunch at Olduvai Gorge. It’s a fascinating archeological site we will definitely visit if you are interested in history. The most famous skull found here belongs to Zinjathropus, known as ‘Nutcracker Man’. He lived about 1.75 million years ago. There is also a museum displaying 3.6 million year old footprints in volcanic rock, discovered nearby. Having spent some time in this beautiful location we drive you towards Ngorongoro . The way is interesting and there’s game viewing en route. Towards the evening we’ll arrive at the rim of Ngorongoro Crater Dinner and Overnight in the campsite

DAY5: NGORONGORO – ARUSHA

Our last day starts very early in the morning. Equipped with a picnic lunch we descend 2000 ft. down the crater by our 4whell drive vehicle. Let’s explore this Garden of Eden. Ngorongoro is a huge and deep volcanic crater. There’s rich pasture, swamps, forest and permanent water on the crater floor. That’s why wildlife here is so diverse and numerous. There are up to 25.000 larger animals living here. It’d the best opportunity to see Black Rhino and many other rare species like the black-manned lion. We will have a fantastic day and then drive back to Arusha. for dinner and overnight at the budget hotel on own.
