OVERVIEW

9 DAYS ABERDARE / SAMBURU / MOUNT KENYA / LAKE NAKURU / MASAI MARA

This comprehensive Kenyan safari itinerary offers an extraordinary journey through diverse landscapes, from the misty highlands to the arid north, the majestic slopes of a towering mountain, the vibrant Rift Valley lake, and the iconic savannah plains.

Aberdare National Park: Your adventure begins in the cool, mist-shrouded Aberdare Ranges. This montane park offers a unique safari experience focused on high-altitude wildlife within its dense forests, moorlands, and cascading waterfalls. Expect to see species like the elusive bongo antelope, giant forest hog, black rhino, and various primates like the black and white colobus monkey. The renowned “tree hotels” and lodges built over watering holes provide exceptional and intimate wildlife viewing, particularly at night. The dramatic scenery and hiking opportunities add another dimension to this destination.

Samburu National Reserve: Journeying north, you’ll arrive in the arid and rugged landscapes of Samburu. This reserve, located north of the equator, is characterized by the life-giving Ewaso Ng’iro River. Samburu is famous for its unique “Samburu Special Five”: the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx, species not commonly found in other Kenyan parks. The riverbanks teem with wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, and a vibrant array of birdlife. The rich cultural heritage of the Samburu people adds a distinct flavor to this region.

Mount Kenya National Park: Next, you’ll experience the majestic beauty of Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak. While summiting requires specialized trekking, the lower slopes and surrounding national park offer stunning scenery, diverse ecosystems, and unique wildlife adapted to higher altitudes. Explore lush forests, bamboo zones, and alpine moorlands, keeping an eye out for species like the elusive bongo, black and white colobus monkeys, Sykes’ monkeys, and various bird species. The crisp mountain air and dramatic landscapes provide a refreshing contrast to the previous destinations.

Lake Nakuru National Park: Descending into the Great Rift Valley, you’ll reach Lake Nakuru, a renowned soda lake famous for its spectacular flocks of pink flamingos (though their numbers can fluctuate). This park is a haven for birdwatchers, with hundreds of other species present. Lake Nakuru is also a crucial sanctuary for both black and white rhinos and Rothschild’s giraffes, offering excellent opportunities for sightings. The surrounding acacia woodlands and grasslands support a variety of other wildlife, including lions, leopards, waterbucks, and baboons.

Maasai Mara National Reserve: Your safari culminates in the legendary Maasai Mara, Kenya’s most famous wildlife reserve and an extension of Tanzania’s Serengeti. Prepare for the quintessential African safari experience across vast, rolling savannah plains dotted with acacia trees. The Mara boasts an incredible concentration of wildlife, including all the “Big Five” and numerous other predators and herbivores. Depending on the time of year (typically July to October), you might witness the awe-inspiring Great Wildebeest Migration. The iconic landscapes and rich cultural heritage of the Maasai people create an unforgettable finale to your Kenyan adventure.

This extensive itinerary provides an unparalleled exploration of Kenya’s diverse natural beauty and abundant wildlife, offering a wide range of experiences from montane forests to arid plains and the iconic savannah.
