OVERVIEW

5 DAYS TANZANIA SAFARI L.MANYARA / NGORONGORO CRATER / SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

I can certainly provide an overview of Lake Manyara National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, building upon our previous discussion. Here’s a focused look at these incredible destinations:

Lake Manyara National Park (Tanzania)

  • Scenic Soda Lake: The park’s centerpiece is a shallow, alkaline lake that shimmers with vast flocks of flamingos, often painting the shoreline pink. The number of flamingos fluctuates depending on water levels and algae concentration.
  • Tree-Climbing Lions: While sightings aren’t guaranteed, Lake Manyara is known for lions that occasionally seek refuge in the branches of acacia trees, a somewhat unusual behavior.
  • Diverse Habitats in a Compact Area: Despite its smaller size compared to the Serengeti, Manyara boasts a remarkable variety of ecosystems, including groundwater forests, acacia woodlands, grassy plains, and marshlands, all nestled beneath the dramatic Great Rift Valley Escarpment.
  • Abundant Birdlife: With over 400 recorded species, it’s a haven for bird enthusiasts. Expect to see various waterbirds, raptors, and forest dwellers.
  • Large Elephant Herds: The park is known for its healthy populations of elephants, often seen foraging along the lake shores and within the lush forests.
  • Other Wildlife Encounters: You’ll likely spot buffaloes, giraffes (including the darker-maned Masai giraffe), zebras, wildebeest, hippos, and a variety of antelope species. Primates like baboons and blue monkeys are also common.
  • Unique Activities: Besides traditional game drives, Lake Manyara sometimes offers opportunities for canoeing on the lake, providing a different perspective on the wildlife and scenery.

Ngorongoro Crater (Tanzania)

  • World’s Largest Unbroken Caldera: This massive, self-contained volcanic caldera is the main draw, offering breathtaking panoramic views from the rim down to the crater floor, approximately 600 meters below.
  • “Eighth Wonder of the World”: Often lauded for its stunning natural beauty and exceptionally high concentration of wildlife within its relatively small area (about 260 square kilometers).
  • A Natural Sanctuary: The crater floor forms a unique ecosystem that supports a dense population of diverse animals year-round, including all of the “Big Five”.
  • High Density of Predators: Lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas thrive in the crater due to the abundant prey.
  • Significant Black Rhino Population: The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in East Africa to spot the endangered black rhino.
  • Lake Magadi: A soda lake on the crater floor that often attracts flamingos and other waterbirds.
  • Archaeological Significance: The nearby Olduvai Gorge is a crucial site in the study of human evolution, with significant fossil discoveries.
  • Maasai Presence: The Maasai people traditionally graze their livestock within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, including the rim, contributing to the cultural landscape.
  • Strict Regulations: Due to its ecological importance, there are regulations regarding vehicle numbers and movement within the crater to minimize impact.

Serengeti National Park (Tanzania)

  • Iconic Endless Plains: The vast, seemingly limitless savannah is the defining characteristic of the Serengeti, its name derived from the Maasai word “Siringit,” meaning “endless plains.”
  • The Great Wildebeest Migration: This is the park’s most famous spectacle, involving millions of wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, undertaking a cyclical journey in search of fresh grazing. The timing and location of the herds vary throughout the year.
  • Exceptional Predator Populations: The Serengeti supports a high density of predators, including lions (often seen in prides on kopjes – rocky outcrops), leopards (often solitary and elusive), cheetahs (well-adapted to the open plains), hyenas, and wild dogs.
  • The “Big Five” and More: It offers excellent opportunities to see lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos (both black and white, though rhino sightings can be less frequent in some areas), and buffaloes, along with a plethora of other wildlife like giraffes, zebras, various antelope species, and numerous bird species (over 500 recorded).
  • Diverse Ecosystems: While primarily known for its grasslands, the Serengeti also includes woodlands, riverine forests, and kopjes, each supporting different plant and animal communities.
  • Hot Air Balloon Safaris: A popular way to appreciate the sheer scale of the Serengeti plains and witness wildlife from a unique perspective.
  • Cultural Interactions: Opportunities exist to visit Maasai villages bordering the park, offering insights into their traditional way of life.
  • Important Conservation Area: The Serengeti is a crucial area for wildlife research and conservation efforts.

In essence, Lake Manyara offers a more compact and diverse introduction to Tanzanian wildlife beneath the Rift Valley Escarpment, the Ngorongoro Crater presents a unique and concentrated wildlife experience within a breathtaking geological wonder, and the Serengeti delivers the classic African safari with its endless plains and the dramatic spectacle of the Great Migration. They are often combined in safari itineraries to provide a well-rounded and unforgettable East African adventure.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: ARUSHA – LAKE MANYARA

Our first day starts early in the morning. After breakfast we pick you up at your hotel in Arusha. We’re on the way to Lake Manyara. The national park is a lovely location; a thin green band of forest, flanked on one side by the cliffs of the Rift Valley Wall, on the other by the shores of the ancient soda lake. Wildlife here is very diverse. We’ll see many baboons and if we’re lucky – the famous tree-climbing lion. Lake Manyara is also one of the finest parks for bird lovers. In the afternoon we’ll drive to Karatu for dinner and overnight at lake manyara wildlife lodge.

DAY 2: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast we start with a drive to the Serengeti national park . There’s a lot to observe: More than 1.5 million wildbeest and 700 000 zebras are on their way here if we pass by at the time of the famous annual migration. After a Sunset Game Drive we will have Dinner and Overnight in the Serengeti wildlife lodge.

DAY 3: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Our day starts with a morning game drive in Serengeti. For animals, that’s an active time of the day – not hot yet, so there is a lot to see out there. Full day game viewing Dinner and Overnight in the Serengeti wildlife lodge.

Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle.

The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzania’s greatest park. Golden-maned lion prides feast on the abundance of plain grazers. Solitary leopards haunt the acacia trees lining the Seronera River, while a high density of cheetahs prowls the southeastern plains. Almost uniquely, all three African jackal species occur here, alongside the spotted hyena and a host of more elusive small predators, ranging from the insectivorous aardwolf to the beautiful serval cat.

DAY 4: SERENGETI – NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA

Pre-breakfast game drive ,full breakfast andlater drive to Ngorongoro conservation area. On our way back we will stop for picnic lunch at Oldupai Gorge. It’s a fascinating archeological site we will definetly visit if you are interested in history. The most famous skull found here belongs to Zinjathropus, known as ‘Nutcracker Man’. He lived about 1.75 million years ago. There is also a museum displaying 3.6 million year old footprints in volcanic rock, discovered nearby. Having spent some time in this beautiful location we drive you towards Ngorongoro . The way is interesting and there’s game viewing en route. Towards the evening we’ll arrive at the rim of Ngorongoro Crater Dinner and Overnight in the ngorongoro wildlife lodge

DAY 5: NGORONGORO – ARUSHA

Our last day starts very early in the morning. Equipped with a picnic lunch we descend 2000 ft. down the crater by our 4whell drive vehicle. Let’s explore this Garden of Eden. Ngorongoro is a huge and deep volcanic crater. There’s rich pasture, swamps, forest and permanent water on the crater floor. That’s why wildlife here is so diverse and numerous. There are up to 25.000 larger animals living here. It’d the best opportunity to see Black Rhino and many other rare species like the black-manned lion. We will have a fantastic day and then drive back to Arusha. for dinner and overnight at the budget hotel on own.
