Day by day

5 days in East Africa.

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi to Amboseli

    Collect from your Nairobi hotel or from Jomo Kenyatta International and drive south across the Athi plains, reaching Amboseli for a late lunch. The afternoon is spent in a 4x4 Land Cruiser on the short grass around the swamps — Amboseli's water rises from Kilimanjaro's melt, filtered underground for decades, and it keeps this corner green when everything around it is dust. That reliability is why the elephant families here are so large and so settled, and why individual matriarchs have been followed by researchers for more than fifty years. Dinner and overnight.

  2. Day 2

    A full day in Amboseli

    Out before sunrise, which is when Kilimanjaro is most often free of cloud and when the light across the pan is at its best. With a full day you can work the whole basin rather than a corner: the Enkongo Narok swamps, the open pans where elephant cross in long single-file lines, and Observation Hill for a view over the entire park on foot. Amboseli's bird list runs past four hundred species, and the shallow seasonal lake draws large numbers when it holds water. Return to camp for lunch and a quiet afternoon, then out again for the evening drive.

  3. Day 3

    Amboseli to Tsavo West

    A last early drive with the mountain, then breakfast and the short transfer east into Tsavo West through the Kimana area. The landscape changes quickly: Amboseli's open pans give way to hills, thick green bush and old lava. Afternoon at Mzima Springs, where around fifty million gallons a day rise clear out of porous rock from the Chyulu Hills, and a submerged viewing chamber lets you watch hippo and shoals of barbel from below the waterline. Dinner and overnight at camp.

  4. Day 4

    A full day in Tsavo West

    Tsavo West rewards a slower pace because its game is more dispersed than Amboseli's and the country is more broken. The day can take in the Shetani lava flow — black, barely weathered rock that Kamba tradition holds was the devil coming out of the earth — the Roaring Rocks escarpment for the long view towards the Chyulus, and the Ngulia area, which is one of the most important bird ringing sites in Africa during the autumn migration. Leopard are present here in reasonable numbers, though as everywhere they take patience. Dinner and overnight at camp.

  5. Day 5

    Tsavo West to Nairobi

    A final morning game drive before breakfast, then the drive back to Nairobi on the Mombasa road, arriving in the early afternoon. If you are connecting to the coast rather than flying out of Nairobi, this is an easy journey to redirect — Tsavo sits between the two — and we can quote it that way.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

Game viewing across Kenya is at its most reliable in the dry months, roughly June to October and again in January and February, when the grass is shorter and animals concentrate around permanent water. The long rains fall around April and May and the short rains in November; both bring green country, fewer vehicles and lower rates, at the cost of some unpredictability on the roads. There is no month in which this journey cannot run.

Your questions, answered.

Is Kilimanjaro always visible?

No. The mountain generates its own cloud and is frequently hidden through the middle of the day. Early morning and late afternoon give the best chance, and two nights in Amboseli rather than one materially improves your odds.

Can this be combined with the coast?

Yes, and it is a natural pairing — Tsavo lies on the way to Mombasa and Diani. Tell us when you enquire and we will quote the combination.

Is the named property guaranteed?

No. Properties are suggested for fit and current operation, and are confirmed on your written quotation. If a camp is full for your dates we will propose a comparable one rather than substitute something lesser without telling you.

What vehicle is used?

A 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, used privately for your party on this journey.
