Kenya and Tanzania entry documents and travel insurance

Check entry permission and mandatory inbound insurance separately for every country in your route. Requirements depend on your passport, status and first entry point; approval estimates are not guarantees.

Start with the exact journey

Write down your nationality, passport expiry, every country entered or transited, and the order of mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Then check the official portals linked here. A Kenya–Tanzania road safari can create different requirements from a direct international arrival, and a return to Kenya needs its own eligibility check.

This guide was checked on 5 November 2026. It identifies the documents to confirm; the relevant authorities and your airline determine your eligibility. Do not buy a policy or submit an application based on a general exemption summary when your circumstances are unclear.

Kenya: eTA and admission are different

The Directorate of Immigration publishes nationality- and status-based eTA exemptions. Where an eTA is required, the authority recommends applying at least two weeks before departure even though it gives a usual processing estimate of three days. Each passenger who needs authorization must be covered, including within a family application. Approval authorizes travel; immigration decides admission at the border.

The eTA FAQ lists a passport valid for at least six months and one blank page. Other official traveller guidance can require more blank pages for particular passport holders, so check your own government and carrier as well. A JKIA-to-Wilson road transfer leaves the airport: do not treat it as an airside transit exemption.

Kenya: the October 2026 insurance change

Kenya’s eTA portal now displays a mandatory inbound health-insurance notice. The linked eCitizen insurance portal gives 5 October 2026 as the start date for non-exempt short-stay visitors. It says eTA exemption does not itself establish insurance exemption and that existing home-country insurance does not replace the required policy.

The portal lists exempt groups, but its treatment of some children, statuses and stay durations is inconsistent with other published wording. Confirm your individual case directly with the authority before paying. Keep the issued certificate available and continue to assess your own cancellation, evacuation, activities and pre-existing-condition cover separately.

Tanzania: check the visa category for your passport

Tanzania Immigration states that its visa covers mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, with the first destination selected in the application. Its ordinary-visa requirements include six months of passport validity, an unused visa page and a return ticket. US tourists are directed to the multiple-entry visa even for a single visit.

Visa-on-arrival eligibility and referral requirements depend on nationality. Some published nationality lists conflict, so ask Immigration to resolve an unclear case before travel. Standard online processing is described as within ten days; referral applicants are advised to allow at least two months. Neither statement guarantees your result or processing time.

Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar: avoid buying the wrong duplicate cover

The Ministry of Finance confirms mainland inbound-insurance implementation began on 1 October 2026. Its notice links first-entry routing to the provider: NIC for mainland-first entry and ZIC for Zanzibar-first entry.

ZIC’s 7 October clarification says a combined mainland-and-Zanzibar journey does not require two applicable inbound policies. It also explains transitional and valid-policy cases. Read that clarification alongside your actual policy rather than automatically buying another policy for the island leg. Mainland exemptions for qualifying EAC or SADC travellers do not automatically remove Zanzibar requirements.

The stated cover period does not prove that trekking, evacuation, cancellation or pre-existing conditions are covered. Check the terms of the issuing provider and arrange any additional protection your trip needs.

A final document check

  • Use the official application and insurer links, and check that names and passport details match exactly.
  • Keep approved documents and insurance certificates available offline as well as digitally.
  • Check yellow-fever certificate rules against your complete travel and transit history with a travel-health clinician and the destination authority.
  • Confirm the safari start date only after allowing time for approvals, international arrival and any airport transfer.
