Prepare with your itinerary in hand
CDC advises a pre-travel medical appointment at least a month before Kenya travel. Share every park, overnight and beach or mountain extension, not only the country name. Your clinician needs your health history, medicines, age, pregnancy status where relevant and planned activities to give individual advice.
Use the current official country pages and live travel-health alerts before departure. Notices can change faster than an editorial guide. This page does not prescribe a vaccine, preventive medicine or dose.
Distinguish yellow-fever advice from entry documentation
A vaccine can be recommended for health reasons without being required for every arrival, and a certificate can be required because of a previous country or transit. Kenya’s Ministry of Health requires a yellow-fever certificate for arrivals from endemic countries. Tanzania’s mainland notice includes travel from listed risk countries; Kenya appears on that list.
The mainland notice describes a transit threshold of at least 12 hours, while other official traveller guidance uses “over 12 hours.” Do not resolve that edge case by guessing. Ask the authority and your clinician about your exact connection, any age or medical exemption, and the timing of a valid certificate. The mainland notice specifies ten days before entry where vaccination is required.
Discuss malaria prevention for the places you actually visit
CDC identifies malaria risk in parts of both Kenya and Tanzania, including safari areas and Zanzibar in its Tanzania guidance. A city stop, a high-altitude segment or a hotel with screens does not settle the risk for the rest of your itinerary.
Ask your clinician whether preventive medicine is appropriate and how to reduce mosquito bites. Do not choose a medicine from another traveller’s packing list. If you feel unwell during or after travel, seek medical assessment and tell the clinician where you travelled.
Mountain and water activities need separate attention
CDC flags altitude illness on Kilimanjaro and advises discussing prevention and treatment with a doctor. Fitness alone does not establish how you will respond to altitude. Make sure the climbing plan addresses acclimatisation, guide communication and what happens if someone must descend.
CDC also advises against swimming in untreated fresh water in Tanzania because of schistosomiasis. A scenic lake, river or pool described as natural should not be treated as a swimming recommendation. Follow current local and medical advice for the specific activity.
Make practical arrangements before departure
- Carry enough prescribed medication for the journey and discuss storage, documentation and contingency supplies with the relevant professional.
- Tell the operator about essential refrigeration, power, mobility or dietary requirements before accommodation is confirmed; property facilities need verification.
- Read insurance exclusions for evacuation, existing conditions, trekking altitude and adventure activities. Mandatory inbound insurance is not proof that every activity is covered.
- Know who to contact during the trip, and retain policy details and emergency contact information offline.
Check live alerts close to travel
At the November 2026 review, CDC and Kenya’s Ministry of Health carried specific current Ebola-related notices. Read the live notices for their latest status and advice rather than relying on a copied case count or assuming this guide is a live alert feed. Discuss any concern with a travel-health clinician before departure.
