Name the airport, not just the city
Nairobi has separate JKIA and Wilson airports. Safarilink operates from Wilson and describes JKIA as roughly 18 kilometres away by road; that distance is not a reliable transfer-time estimate. Immigration, baggage collection, traffic and the next flight’s check-in all matter. A tight connection may require a different safari start or an overnight.
In northern Tanzania, Kilimanjaro International and Arusha Airport are also separate. Do not assume a ticket saying “Arusha” means JRO. Read the airport code, operating carrier and check-in instructions on each booking. Current airline schedules can change, and conflicting airport descriptions should be resolved with the actual carrier.
Choose the airstrip with the camp
Safarilink explicitly advises matching a lodge or camp to the airstrip it serves. A flight into a park does not by itself establish a convenient transfer to any lodge in that park. Ask for the arrival airstrip, who meets you, the expected drive and whether that drive is a transfer or a planned wildlife activity.
If you change accommodation, recheck the airstrip before keeping the same ticket. Cross-border Mara–Serengeti flying may route through other airports; it should not be described as a direct park-to-park hop unless the booked service actually is one.
There is no single universal safari luggage allowance
At this review, Safarilink lists 15 kg including hand luggage on most routes, with 20 kg on specified coastal and regional routes. Coastal Aviation lists 15 kg including carry-on baggage. Auric Air lists 20 kg including hand luggage, cameras and personal items. The operating airline, specific route and ticket are decisive.
Soft bags are commonly requested or recommended because aircraft storage is constrained. Coastal publishes a baggage-door size of 76 × 48 × 29 cm; Auric publishes maximum bag dimensions of 90 × 65 × 35 cm. These are different policies, not a regional standard. Check the live rule before buying a bag or paying for excess weight.
Excess luggage can depend on payload and available space even when a fee is offered. Do not arrive assuming a large camera case will be accepted. Ask the airline about essential equipment, mobility aids and batteries directly, and agree any storage or transfer solution before travel.
Pack from the smallest allowance outward
- Weigh the entire permitted combination, including camera equipment and hand luggage where the carrier counts them.
- Keep essential documents and medicines accessible, while following airline security and battery rules.
- Agree laundry arrangements with the actual property before using them to reduce clothing weight.
- If combining mountain, wildlife and beach travel, arrange where specialist equipment stays during each leg; do not assume the next vehicle or aircraft has spare storage.
Road versus flying: compare the whole day
A flight can replace a long road leg, but it adds check-in, possible intermediate stops and an airstrip transfer. A road itinerary can make useful stops along the way, but demands time in the vehicle. Compare door-to-door timing, luggage, cost and the first available game drive for your actual route.
For families, photographers or travellers with limited mobility, discuss boarding, seating, steps and transfer vehicles before booking. A shorter flight time does not establish that the whole journey is easier for every traveller.
