A volcano that collapsed in on itself two and a half million years ago and left a 260 square kilometre bowl with walls 600 metres high. Inside it, wildlife lives year-round at a density that exists almost nowhere else.
The destination
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers more than 8,000 square kilometres of highland, forest and plain, but the crater itself is what most travellers come for: an intact caldera roughly 19 kilometres across, with grassland, a soda lake, swamp and fever-tree forest on its floor.
Because there is permanent water and grazing inside the walls, animals do not need to migrate out. Around 25,000 large mammals live on the floor — wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hyena and one of Tanzania's densest lion populations. It is also one of the more reliable places in East Africa to see black rhino, though sightings are usually distant.
Ngorongoro is not a national park but a conservation area, which means Maasai families continue to graze cattle on the highlands alongside the wildlife. You will pass herders on the crater rim road and in the Ndutu direction — a working landscape rather than a sealed reserve.
The crater is compact and popular, and the floor can only be driven between set hours, so vehicle numbers build through the morning. Descending at opening time, or staying on the rim rather than driving up from Karatu, makes a substantial difference to the experience.

Tanzania's National Bureau of Statistics, using TMA information, describes two principal rain periods in the northern and northeastern regions: March–May long rains and an October-to-early-December short-rain period. Jan – Mar
Warm and mostly dry on the rim, and close to the Ndutu plains where the migration calves. A strong month to combine both.
Apr – May
Green highlands, mist on the rim and far fewer vehicles on the floor. Cold at night and some rim roads are slippery.
Jun – Oct
Clear skies and the peak travel period. Descend at opening time to stay ahead of the vehicles coming up from Karatu.
Nov – Dec
Brief showers, fresh grass and good light. Quieter than the dry season apart from the festive fortnight.

Key areas
The crater is the centrepiece, but the wider highlands hold several distinct experiences.
Grassland, the Munge stream, Lerai fever-tree forest and Lake Magadi. One full day covers it well; the descent and ascent roads are one-way and driving hours are fixed.
Montane forest at 2,300 metres where most lodges sit. Cold, often misty, with views straight down into the caldera at breakfast.
Part of the conservation area rather than the Serengeti park. From December to March the migration calves here and predator activity peaks.
