  1. Day 1

    Arusha to Tarangire National Park

    Collect from Arusha or Kilimanjaro International and drive south-west to Tarangire, arriving for lunch. The afternoon game drive in a 4x4 Land Cruiser follows the Tarangire River, the only permanent water for a considerable distance — which is precisely why the park holds the elephant numbers it does through the dry months. Tarangire's baobabs, some of them many centuries old, make it visually unlike anywhere else on the northern circuit. Dinner and overnight.

  2. Day 2

    Tarangire to Lake Manyara

    A morning game drive in Tarangire, then the short transfer to Lake Manyara. The park is a narrow strip pinned between the Rift Valley escarpment and the lake, and that compression is what makes it interesting — you pass through dense groundwater forest fed by springs at the base of the escarpment, out onto open floodplain, and then to the soda lake with its flamingo and pelican, all within a few kilometres. Manyara's lions are locally known for resting in the acacias. Dinner and overnight.

  3. Day 3

    Lake Manyara to the Ngorongoro highlands

    A relaxed morning before driving up into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a shared landscape where Maasai families graze cattle alongside wildlife — a different model from a national park, and visible as you climb. Arrive on the crater rim in the afternoon, in time to watch the light move across the caldera floor two thousand feet below. The rim is cold in the evening; warm clothing matters more here than anywhere else on the trip. Dinner and overnight.

  4. Day 4

    Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti

    Descend to the crater floor at first light for a half-day game drive. Around twenty-five thousand large animals live within the caldera, including black rhino, and the enclosed setting means that a morning here is genuinely dense with sightings. Picnic lunch on the floor, then climb out and drive west across the conservation area to the Serengeti, entering through Naabi Hill gate as the plains open out. Dinner and overnight in the Serengeti.

  5. Day 5

    A full day in the Serengeti

    A full day with a picnic lunch. Where you spend it depends on the season and on where the migration currently is — the southern plains around Ndutu in the calving months, the central Seronera valley year-round, or the north towards the Mara River in the crossing season. Seronera's permanent water holds resident lion, leopard in the riverine figs and cheetah out on the grass whatever the herds are doing. A sunrise balloon flight can be arranged at extra cost. Dinner and overnight.

  6. Day 6

    Serengeti to Nungwi, Zanzibar

    A last morning game drive, then transfer to the airstrip for the flight to Zanzibar, usually via Arusha. On arrival you are met and driven north to Nungwi, at the island's northern tip — around an hour and a half from the airport, through villages and past the fields where much of Zanzibar's spice is still grown. The rest of the day is unstructured. Dinner and overnight at your resort.

    Nungwi sits at the island's northern tip, where the tide drops less than elsewhere.

  7. Day 7

    Nungwi

    Nothing scheduled. Nungwi's advantage over the east coast is tidal: the drop here is small enough that the sea remains swimmable through the day rather than retreating several hundred metres. Dhow trips, diving and snorkelling on the reef can all be arranged locally, and the sunsets on this side of the island are the reason people choose the north. Dinner and overnight.

  8. Day 8

    Nungwi, with Stone Town optional

    Another free day. If you would rather not spend it on the beach, Stone Town is a straightforward day trip — a UNESCO World Heritage site of coral-stone buildings, carved doors and narrow lanes reflecting Swahili, Omani, Indian and European influence over centuries, including the sobering history of the slave market. A spice-farm visit can be combined with it on the way back. Dinner and overnight.

  9. Day 9

    Departure from Zanzibar

    A final morning on the coast, then the transfer to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport for your flight home or onward. Departure timing is matched to your international connection when we quote the journey; a late flight means a full last day on the island.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

Game viewing across Tanzania is at its most reliable in the dry months, roughly June to October and again in January and February, when the grass is shorter and animals concentrate around permanent water. The long rains fall around April and May and the short rains in November; both bring green country, fewer vehicles and lower rates, at the cost of some unpredictability on the roads. There is no month in which this journey cannot run.

Why Nungwi rather than the east coast?

Tides. On much of Zanzibar's east coast the sea withdraws a long way at low tide and swimming is only possible for part of the day. At the northern tip the range is far smaller, so the water stays usable throughout.

Is the flight to Zanzibar included?

It is part of the intended routing, but domestic flights are quoted separately from ground arrangements so you can see what they cost. Your written quotation will itemise them.

When is the best time for this combination?

June to October suits both halves — dry on the mainland and reliable on the island. January and February are also good. Avoid the long rains around April and May, when some Zanzibar properties close.

Is the named property guaranteed?

No. Properties are suggested for fit and current operation, and confirmed on your written quotation. If a camp or resort is full for your dates we will propose a comparable one rather than quietly substitute something lesser.
