Day by day

7 days in East Africa.

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi to the Maasai Mara

    A short scheduled flight from Nairobi's Wilson Airport puts you on a Mara airstrip in under an hour, where your guide meets you with a 4x4 Land Cruiser. After settling in and lunch, the afternoon game drive introduces the reserve — the Mara and Talek rivers, the open plains between them, and the resident prides. Arriving by air rather than road means the first day is a safari day rather than a travel day. Dinner and overnight at camp.

  2. Day 2

    A full day in the Maasai Mara

    A full day with a picnic lunch. The Mara carries the highest large-predator density in Kenya, and the open country makes for unusually good visibility — cheetah in particular are easier to find here than in more wooded parks. An optional balloon flight at dawn drifts over the plains and lands to breakfast on the grass. The Oloololo escarpment on the reserve's western edge gives the long view across the whole ecosystem, into Tanzania. Dinner and overnight at camp.

    Both countries' best camps are small, and worth booking early for honeymoon dates.

  3. Day 3

    Maasai Mara to the Serengeti

    A morning game drive, then transfer to the airstrip for the flight across the border to the Serengeti. The two reserves are one continuous ecosystem — the animals do not recognise the line, and the country looks much the same on both sides — but the Serengeti is vastly larger, and that becomes apparent immediately. Afternoon game drive on arrival. Dinner and overnight at camp.

  4. Day 4

    A full day in the Serengeti

    A full day on the plains. Where you spend it depends on the season: the southern short-grass plains around Ndutu for the calving months, the central Seronera valley for reliable resident predators year-round, or the north towards the Mara River if the herds are there. Seronera's permanent water supports lion, leopard in the riverine figs, and cheetah on the open grass regardless of what the migration is doing. Dinner and overnight at camp.

  5. Day 5

    Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater rim

    Game drive south-east across the plains, leaving the park through Naabi Hill and climbing into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The rim sits at around 2,300 metres and is noticeably cold in the evening compared with the plains — warm clothing is worth packing. Arrive in time to watch the light change over the caldera. Dinner and overnight on the rim.

    The crater is a collapsed volcano, and everything inside it lives within the caldera walls.

  6. Day 6

    Ngorongoro Crater to Tarangire

    Descend to the crater floor after an early breakfast. The caldera holds roughly twenty-five thousand large animals in around 260 square kilometres of grassland, swamp, forest and soda lake, including one of the better remaining chances of black rhino in Tanzania. Picnic lunch beside the Ngoitokitok springs, then climb out and drive to Tarangire, arriving for dinner and overnight.

  7. Day 7

    Tarangire to Arusha

    A final morning game drive along the Tarangire River. In the dry months this is the only reliable water for a long way, and elephant concentrate here in numbers that are among the highest in Tanzania; the park's ancient baobabs make it visually distinct from everywhere else on the circuit. After brunch, transfer to Arusha or directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight, or on to Zanzibar if you are extending.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

Game viewing across Kenya and Tanzania is at its most reliable in the dry months, roughly June to October and again in January and February, when the grass is shorter and animals concentrate around permanent water. The long rains fall around April and May and the short rains in November; both bring green country, fewer vehicles and lower rates, at the cost of some unpredictability on the roads. There is no month in which this journey cannot run.

Your questions, answered.

Are the cross-border flights included?

The routing is built around them, but domestic and cross-border flights are quoted separately from ground arrangements so the cost is visible. Your quotation will itemise them.

Do we need visas for both countries?

Yes, Kenya and Tanzania are separate entries with separate requirements, and the East Africa Tourist Visa does not cover Tanzania. We will set out what is needed for your nationality when we quote.

Can we extend to Zanzibar?

Yes — finishing at Kilimanjaro International makes a Zanzibar extension straightforward, and we also offer a nine-day Tanzania honeymoon that includes it. Ask when you enquire.

Is the named property guaranteed?

No. Properties are suggested for fit and current operation, and are confirmed on your written quotation. If a camp is full for your dates we will propose a comparable one rather than substitute something lesser without telling you.
