International arrival and safari departure
Give the operator the flight number, airport and arrival date before a pickup is confirmed. Nairobi’s JKIA and Wilson are separate airports. In Tanzania, Arusha Airport and Kilimanjaro International are also separate. The wrong airport assumption can erase the apparent convenience of a connection.
For an early safari departure, ask whether an arrival-night hotel is the more workable plan. Allow time for immigration, checked baggage and the road transfer. Airline check-in deadlines and traffic need to be considered together; a published distance is not a travel-time promise.
Crossing between Kenya and Tanzania
Kenya Revenue Authority lists Namanga, Isebania, Taveta and Lunga Lunga among official one-stop border posts. The appropriate crossing depends on the booked route. It also marks Sand River gate as closed, so do not assume the Mara and Serengeti can be joined through that gate because the landscapes are adjacent.
The current itinerary should identify the crossing, the handover arrangements and what happens to luggage. Check who accompanies you through the process and whether the guide or vehicle changes. Ask about current hours and required documents close to departure rather than relying on an old travel account.
Documents need to match the whole circuit
A combined itinerary may require separate entry permission for Kenya and Tanzania, an insurance check in both countries and yellow-fever documentation linked to prior travel. Returning to Kenya after Tanzania must be checked against the authorization actually issued.
Keep documents available offline and follow the border authority’s instructions. The operator can explain the travel sequence, but cannot guarantee admission or remove a documentary requirement. Do not use a generic safari page to decide a nationality-specific exemption.
Flying across the ecosystem still involves routing
Current Flightlink schedules show some Serengeti–Mara combinations routed through other airports. A flight itinerary can therefore involve several legs and formalities rather than a simple direct hop. Confirm every airport, connection, baggage limit and transfer before comparing it with road travel.
If your quoted flight changes, recheck the day’s game-drive time and accommodation transfer. A replacement arrival at a different airstrip may not serve the same lodge conveniently.
Avoid an overfilled transfer day
On a cross-border day, prioritize a realistic arrival and the planned overnight. Extra excursions and fixed dinner or flight commitments reduce flexibility if formalities take longer. Tell us what is fixed and what can move before the route is finalized.
For a family or anyone who finds long vehicle days difficult, compare a slower circuit or an appropriately routed flight. The right choice depends on the whole door-to-door journey, not only the headline driving time.
