Day by day

10 days in East Africa.

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi – Lake Nakuru

    Your private safari starts with pick-up from your Nairobi hotel or the airport and a transfer to our office to meet your guide, then an immediate departure for Lake Nakuru, roughly two hours away. Stop at the escarpment viewpoint, and watch for Mount Longonot and Lake Naivasha in the distance as the highway runs along the Rift Valley. Picnic lunches are collected in Nakuru before going straight into the national park, famous for flamingos and endangered rhino, with game viewing until around 6pm. Dinner follows on arrival, with the night spent in Nakuru.

  2. Day 2

    Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara

    After breakfast, leave the hotel and descend to Lake Naivasha, where an optional boat ride gets you close to the hippo and the lake's birds. Continue through Narok for lunch and refuelling, then deeper into the Maasai plains to your camp in the reserve. In the afternoon the 4x4 Land Cruiser sets out on the first introductory game drive, tracking the reserve's animals and birds with your driver-guide until sunset. Dinner and overnight at the eco camp.

  3. Day 3

    Maasai Mara National Reserve

    The day starts with breakfast at camp and an 8am departure with picnic lunches for an extensive game drive. The scenery is savanna grassland on rolling hills, and the extensive road and track network is what makes the Mara the best park for game in Kenya, allowing close-range viewing and photography. Drive to the Mara River, the point where the migration crosses, to look for crocodile and hippo, then break for lunch. Game viewing runs until 5pm, followed by a couple of hours for optional activities outside the park. Dinner and overnight at camp.

  4. Day 4

    Maasai Mara – Serengeti National Park

    After breakfast, a Maasai village visit: watch the dancing, hear the songs, see how a homestead is laid out and learn some of the community's bush skills, including lighting a fire. Your Kenyan guide then transfers you to Isebania, where you complete border formalities and meet your Tanzanian guide. Proceed into the Serengeti with a game drive en route to Seronera camp for dinner and overnight.

  5. Day 5

    Serengeti National Park Game Viewing

    Leave camp with picnic lunches and embark on a full day of game viewing in the Serengeti, tracking the animals of this vast savanna grassland from the 4x4 Land Cruiser. The park's size means your guide's experience matters in the search; the Big Five can all be seen here, along with large groups of wildebeest, and the central Seronera valley is one of the best places in Africa for leopard and lion. Dinner and overnight at Seronera camp.

  6. Day 6

    Serengeti – Ngorongoro Crater

    After breakfast and a final game drive in the Serengeti, pack up and drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with picnic lunches en route, passing through the Naabi Hill gate and across the plains to the highlands. The Ngorongoro Crater is counted among the seven natural wonders of Africa, and the campsite sits on its rim. Dinner follows, and the night is spent in tents with beds and bedding provided.

  7. Day 7

    Ngorongoro Crater – Lake Manyara

    After breakfast, descend 2,000 feet into the Ngorongoro Crater in the 4x4 Land Cruiser, game viewing from the descent road and across the crater floor until it is time to climb back to the rim; lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena and, with luck, black rhino are all resident, and flamingo feed on the soda lake. Picnic lunch in the crater, then ascend and drive down to Lake Manyara for dinner and the night.

  8. Day 8

    Lake Manyara – Arusha – Amboseli

    After breakfast, leave with picnic lunches for an extensive game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, known for tree-climbing lions and large numbers of flamingo, with elephant, giraffe, hippo and baboon in the forest and along the shore. Have lunch inside the park, then drive via Arusha to the Namanga border, where you say goodbye to the Tanzanian guide and meet the Kenyan guide again. Continue to Amboseli, arriving at camp in the evening for dinner and overnight.

  9. Day 9

    Amboseli National Park

    A day of game drives in Amboseli National Park, whose swamps are where elephant and hippo bathe in abundance. Beyond the wetlands, zebra, wildebeest, antelope and many birds use the dry plains, and Observation Hill gives a view over the whole park. You might also see Mount Kilimanjaro's peak if the weather permits, usually at dawn or dusk. Picnic lunches are provided, and you return for your overnight stay.

  10. Day 10

    Amboseli National Park – Nairobi

    An early morning game drive from 6am to 9am for a last look at Amboseli, then back to camp for a full breakfast and check-out. Leave the park and drive to Nairobi, where you are dropped at your hotel or transferred to the airport for your flight home. This private safari is priced on request and needs at least two people to book; share your onward travel details so the final day is timed correctly.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

The Great Migration is a natural phenomenon, not a scheduled event. The herds move through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara with the rainfall, so their position shifts from month to month and year to year, and river crossings can never be guaranteed on a given date. Broadly, the calving months in the southern Serengeti fall around January to March, the western and central plains hold the herds from roughly April to June, and the northern Serengeti and the Mara are the usual focus from about July to October. We plan around the most current reports rather than a fixed calendar.
